Chicago (a Great Big Town) – Music by Richard Rodgers Lyrics by Lorenz Hart

Music by Richard Rodgers Lyrics by Lorenz Hart
written for the musical “Pal Joey”. In the movie version of the musical the song was re-titled “San Francisco” since the set of the show was moved from Chicago to San francisco (don’t ask me why), the new lyrics of San Francisco were not by Lorenz Hart .
Introduced by Dancer and Chorus Girls.

Lyrics
There’s a great big town
On a great big lake
Called Chicago.
When the sun goes down
It is wide awake.
Take your ma and your pa,
Go to Chicago.

Boston is England
N’Orleans is France,
New York is anyone’s
For ten cents a dance

But This great big town
On a great big lake
Is America’s first
And Americans make
Chicago.
Hi ya boys.

Notes.
“Ten Cents a Dance” is a popular song in which a taxi dancer laments the hardships of her job. The music was written by Richard Rodgers, with lyrics by Lorenz Hart. The song was published in 1930.
